A fearless and instinctive approach to colour, symbol and form.

Alan Davie was one of the most distinctive figures in post-war British art, developing an expressive visual language shaped by spontaneity, improvisation and a lifelong interest in music, mythology and ancient systems of symbols.

His paintings combine energetic gestures, vivid colour and a dense vocabulary of signs, figures and invented forms. Rather than beginning with a fixed composition, Davie often allowed each image to develop intuitively through the act of painting.

This sense of freedom gives his work a rhythmic, almost musical quality, with layered surfaces that reward sustained looking and reveal new relationships between colour, movement and meaning.
