Overview

Alan Davie occupies a unique position within twentieth-century British art. While often associated with abstraction, his paintings move beyond formal concerns, becoming energetic explorations of imagination, symbolism and intuition.

Working across painting, printmaking and drawing, Davie developed a style characterised by bold colour, spontaneous mark-making and recurring symbols. His work combines intellectual curiosity with creative freedom, resulting in paintings that feel both playful and profound.

Influenced by mythology, archaeology, music and non-Western cultures, Davie created works that resist straightforward interpretation, encouraging viewers to engage with instinct, emotion and imagination.

Alan Davie transformed abstraction into a language of symbols, instinct and imagination, creating some of the most original paintings of the post-war period.

Biography

Born in Grangemouth, Scotland in 1920, Alan Davie became one of the leading figures in post-war British art. After studying at Edinburgh College of Art and serving during the Second World War, he travelled extensively throughout Europe, where he encountered a wide range of artistic and cultural influences.

Davie developed close connections with the international avant-garde and was among the first British artists to engage seriously with Abstract Expressionism. Yet unlike many of his American contemporaries, his work remained deeply rooted in symbolism, mythology, music and spiritual exploration.

His paintings are filled with recurring signs, mysterious figures and energetic forms, reflecting a lifelong fascination with Jungian psychology, ancient cultures and the power of the unconscious mind.

Alongside painting, Davie was an accomplished jazz musician, often describing a direct relationship between musical improvisation and his approach to art-making. This sense of spontaneity and rhythm remains central to many of his most celebrated works.

Throughout a career spanning more than six decades, Davie exhibited internationally and established himself as one of Britain's most important modern painters. Today his work continues to attract collectors seeking significant examples of post-war abstraction and British modernism.
