St Ives Modernism
Trevor
Bell
A leading figure of post-war British abstraction, celebrated for monumental scale, shaped canvases and powerful fields of colour inspired by landscape, atmosphere and light.
Featured work by Trevor Bell
Monumental abstraction shaped by landscape, colour and space.
Trevor Bell emerged as a leading member of the younger generation of artists working in St Ives during the 1950s, developing a bold abstract language influenced by the dramatic landscape and light of West Cornwall.
His paintings are recognised for their energetic structures, sweeping fields of colour and distinctive shaped canvases. Rather than treating the canvas as a passive rectangle, Bell used its physical shape as an active part of the composition.
After spending an extended period working in the United States, his imagery absorbed the scale, heat and intensity of the Floridian environment. On returning to Cornwall, Bell continued to produce ambitious paintings that united physical presence with a strong emotional response to place. :contentReference[oaicite:0]{index=0}
