Richard Hambleton became internationally recognised for his Shadowman figures, which appeared across the streets of New York and other major cities during the late 1970s and 1980s.

His later studio paintings retained the raw energy and expressive intensity of his street practice, combining dramatic brushwork, fragmented figures and atmospheric surfaces.
