Richard Hambleton became internationally recognised for his Shadowman figures, which appeared across the streets of New York and other major cities during the late 1970s and 1980s.

Painted in dark, gestural marks, the figures were positioned in doorways, alleyways and unexpected urban spaces, creating an unsettling sense of movement and human presence.

His later studio paintings retained the raw energy and expressive intensity of his street practice, combining dramatic brushwork, fragmented figures and atmospheric surfaces.
