Biography
Born in Fife, Scotland in 1915, William Gear studied at Edinburgh College of Art before travelling extensively throughout Europe. These experiences exposed him to many of the most progressive artistic movements of the twentieth century.
Following the Second World War, Gear became associated with the influential CoBrA movement, working alongside artists who championed spontaneity, experimentation and expressive freedom.
Throughout his career he held important teaching positions, including serving as Head of Fine Art at Birmingham College of Art, where he influenced a new generation of British artists.
Gear exhibited internationally and became recognised as one of Britain's leading abstract painters. His work can now be found in major public and private collections worldwide.
