Personal experience transformed into vivid visual storytelling.
Charmaine Chanakira is an Afro-Expressionist painter born in Zimbabwe and raised in London. Her work reflects the experience of moving between cultures and the continuing process of understanding identity, belonging and heritage.
Her paintings combine personal memories with broader responses to politics, social justice, contemporary culture and emotional wellbeing. Figures, symbols and recurring motifs are brought together through bold colour and densely layered surfaces.
Working with materials including acrylic paint, oil pastel and pen, Chanakira creates narrative compositions that blend Zimbabwean references with her British upbringing. Hidden inscriptions and visual codes add further layers of meaning for the viewer to uncover.
